Market and Social Research Industry Survey 2015
April 4th, 2016
AMSRO and AMSRS have jointly conducted industry surveys over the past few years providing information on the size and nature of the market and social research industry in Australia.
Our last industry survey (conducted 2014 and based on the 2013 calendar year) received a response rate of 20% and found (in summary): Turnover in Australia was estimated at $721 million (up from $707m in 2012); the strongest client sector was manufacturing (representing 32% of revenue dollars); Quantitative methods accounted for the majority of turnover at 79%; The majority of research design/type continued to be conducted with consumers and represented 65% of revenue dollars; Companies surveyed employed an estimated 2,673 people with 25% full-time, 75% part-time. Questions relating to flexible workplace conditions were included for the first time and found that employers overwhelmingly favoured flexibility with an impressive 89% of participants saying their company offered flexible working arrangements. The report also found that 31% of companies pay parental leave and among those who offer such leave, most provide it on full pay (59%).

This year we encourage all members to participate in the survey. With your support we can look forward to publishing a report that better serves the industry with greater insights, more robust findings and a stronger story to tell. All of which benefits the industry as a whole and your organisations. The results will be used by the Research Council of Australia (RICA) in its consultation with government along with media and public relations communications. The data also feeds into ESOMAR’s annual global study.
Due to changes in the industry and our Associations considering a merger, we have for the first time included a section for your comments about the industry and what factors impact expected markets. The section is optional however please take time to provide feedback. Your thoughts and recommendations are critical to our planning on behalf of the industry and its members.
We therefore encourage you to complete this short survey (based on the 2015 calendar year) via the following online link:
http://survey.websurveycreator.com/s.
Please ensure only one member of the organisation completes this survey.
All members will receive a copy of the consolidated report of findings for their own use. We envisage the report will be completed by June 30, 2016.
The survey itself is anonymous. Please be assured that all data will be handled in complete confidence.
Please complete the survey by Friday 29 April 2016
Thank you for your participation and support of this important initiative. Should you require further information please don’t hesitate to contact Elissa Molloy, CEO, AMSRS on (02) 9566 3100 or email elissa.molloy@amsrs.com.au

Research Effectiveness Awards winners announced
400 researchers from around the country gathered in Melbourne over the past two days to mark the most important event in the calendar of one of Australia’s most influential industries.
Good research leads to business and government decisions that enrich the lives of all Australians. It shapes government, informs social trends and dominates media headlines. The Research Industry Council of Australia’s Research Effectiveness Awards provide a platform from which to demonstrate the positive impact good research has on business and social policy planning and the important role that research professionals and companies play in modern Australian society.
Anne Redman, winner of the Public Policy/ Social Research Award said, “We feel privileged to have worked on such a great project tackling the important issue of ear health in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. In the end, the success boiled down to the willingness and generosity of research participants to share their stories, insights and hopes with us and the fact that the Department of Health and the research team ‘listened hard’ to what the community had to say, and were able to translate this into insights that led to the development of an innovative and successful campaign”.
There are six special categories in the Research Effectiveness Awards including: Communications Strategy Effectiveness, Innovation in Methodology, Public Policy / Social Research, Consumer Insight, Technology Effectiveness and Business to Business.
Winner of the Business to Business award, Sarah Wrigley said; “I am very proud to receive this award for the work we do with National Australia Bank. The NAB’s Quarterly Business Survey has been tracking business conditions and confidence for over 24 years and is regarded as a leading indicator of economic conditions in Australia. I’ve managed this project for pretty much all of this time, and it’s an honour to receive this reward for the second year in a row as recognition of the importance of this piece of research”.
Additionally the awards recognise one of the industry’s up and coming stars with a Young Researcher of Year award and for the very first time, an Employer of the Year Award that pays tribute to industry leaders who demonstrate a strong employer brand and a commitment to people management.
Mark Sundquist, Fiftyfive5 winner of the Best (Large) Employer of the Year Award said, “Our formula from day one has been pretty simple; build the best possible team, support them with a culture that energises and motivates, and deliver brilliant work. Four and a half years in and 42 people strong, the formula is clearly working and this award is testament to that. We have some great momentum in the business going into our next phase of growth and we want to thank all of the team for helping us get there”.

ACMA Telephone Numbering
29 February 2012
ACMA Telephone Numbering – Future Directions Paper – RICA Submission
Calling regulations: Successful outcome for RICA
- Renaming the standard as the Telemarketing and Research Calls Industry Standard 2007
- Restructuring the provision of information requirements in the standard so that research calls have a separate section to non-research (telemarketing and other) calls.
- Reducing the response time from 30 days to seven days for a researcher to provide a call recipient (if requested by the call recipient) with information relating to:
- Where the researcher obtained the call recipient’s telephone number;
- The name of the person the call was intended for (if applicable); and
- The name and contact details of any organisation that provided the information to the person calling (if applicable).
- A new requirement for the researcher to make reasonable efforts to ensure that the calling line identification number displayed is suitable for return telephone contact by a call recipient
- A new requirement for survey calls involving recorded or synthetic voices, whereby the researcher must ensure that a mechanism to enable the call recipient to request information is provided during the call
- Clarification that researchers are not prohibited from making or attempting to make calls on a state or territory public holiday (unless this holiday falls on the same day as one of the prohibited national holidays: New Year’s Day, Australia Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day or a holiday on a weekday in lieu of any of these).
AMSRS members who conduct telephone surveys are advised to examine the amendments in full to determine the specific impact on their operations and whether any changes are required to comply with the new regulations. They can be downloaded at www.comlaw.gov.au/Series/F2007L00815
Duniec says this outcome provides a good example of how RICA can work effectively for the industry.|
‘We have established a template with regard to how we can work effectively with AMSRO through RICA. Our focus is now on access to the Integrated Public Number Database (IPND) and we are planning more face-to-face meetings with key stakeholders in Canberra next year.
‘We’ve also had positive feedback from stakeholders that presenting our case to government with a single voice and recognisable brand is a sensible approach. It was a bit confusing before the introduction of RICA.’
